Grant's Pants ...

This weekend is all about Grant's pants. In his usual fashion, after saying how I needn't bother sewing for him becasuse he has plenty of clothes, he suddenly decided that he has nothing to wear. Grant is taking his 8 year old nephew, Enzo (his father is a Ferrari fan), to Melbourne for Formula One next weekend and now he needs a new wardrobe. These shorts are part of his SWAP as are the jeans I will make him today. I'm pretty happy with these, the pattern gets a little more refined each time I make them, although Grant insists there is something wrong with the pattern because his belly sticks out. You will notice that he never models his garments. I told him I need shots of him wearing them at the end of SWAP and that one comment has prompted a hasty return to the gym and an early morning surf every day this week. I once titled a post Vanit, Thy Name is Man ...

I used a quilting cotton for the pockets and fly thing and I used black satin binding on the waistband. The overlock thread seems a brilliant blue in this shot, but it actually matches quite well. After last weekend and the thread issues with my machine, I tried a few different threads. I bought a reel of denim thread just to see how it worked and I am complete convert. I didn't have a sample of fabric with me when I chose it and I fluked a perfect match. It's a Gutermann thread and I'm going to use it every time I sew denim now, the stitches just disappear. If they make it in larger reels I will buy it for overlocking next time.

I'm still on my mission to knit everything in my stash. These little beanies take about 1 and a quarter of a 50g ball of 8ply. The pattern came from Knitty.com Winter 2009 edition. I knit a lot of things from their website. if you're trying to get rid of small amounts of yarn they have loads of patterns for caps, scarves even headbands (as well as garment patterns).

This is the worst time of year in the subtropics. The weather man tells us that we will have several days of fine weather so I have opened the house, have all the dehumidifiers running and hopefully the house will stop smelling damp.

Great looking pants and hats. It's nice that he wants you to make him clothes, and yes he definitely owes you a photo shoot :)

Our weather is now just starting to warm up. I am so anxious for summer.

Those are great looking pants, top stitching, contrasting pockets and fly and all.

I would like to present you with a noble wife award. Everyone else (ie, me) looks very neglectful in the man-sewing department. Can Grant really wear shorts in Melbourne in March? He must be tough.
I love the wooly hats.
I would do a mould and mildew comparison, but it would be too depressing, it has rained every day here for more than a month, even worse than usual for this time of year.

Carol, you really are becoming a menswear specialist! I wont show this to my husby or he'll be asking me to rustle up a pair before the trip. His packing involved throwing out virtually every old rag in his wardrobe, going shopping and coming home empty handed. ICANTSTANDIT!!! BTW do you take orders?

Wow! you did an awesome job. Oh I so need to learn to make jeans for my guy he would be too thrilled.

Lovely hats and the cable detail is beautiful.
Nice job on the destashing. I am amused that the belly issue is "because of the pants." Heh. We women need to learn that rather than automatically assuming it's our fault.

Wow, your work is ah-maz-ing. I came over to ask you a question about making low-rise men's pants and was just blown away. I think I'll use that knitty pattern, too. Husband loves beanies, I made him Trilobite recently for a trip abroad.

Back to the issue of pants- do I shorten the crotch on the lengthen/shorten line, or do I chop off from the waistline and then make a longer waistband? Do I keep the same pocket shape, but lower it? Thanks so much, I really want to conquer this issue. (He of course doesn't see it as an issue after a lifetime of wearing badly fitted clothes, but he'll be converted eventually.)

I'm definitely putting you on my faves list- thanks so much!

(even more than I hate the constant oppressive damp, I hate horrible little animals invading my house. It baffles me. I go to bed with a pristine house, I wake up with ants swarming on a wall. Ergh.)

Your topstitching paid off completely. It really makes the pants look amazing!

Those trousers look wonderful! I have to admit I am a bit scared to start sewing for my husband, even though I promised him a long time ago. Don't know why really, so I should get to it soon. I hope it will turn out to be something I feared for nothing, as most things in the sewing department turn out to be :-)

I look forward to his modeling day ;-)
