My nemesis ...


Kwik Sew 3378 - so far I have cut this top out four times and this is the first time I've made it past sewing the front seam. It's all about the fabric. I realise now that every other time I've attempted to make this, it was in a beefier knit and it just wasn't going to work. This time I've cut it in a slinky knit and I rather like it.
The fabric came from Clegs in Melbourne. Every month I go to Melnourne for a managers' meeting and last week our meeting closed early. I made the mistake of asking my boss's EA if there was a fabric store nearby. He gave me detailed directions on how to get to Clegs (and I've discovered a fellow fabricaholic). The sad thing is, now that I know how close it is to our office, I will be heading down there every time I'm in Melbourne! As I was on a day trip and only a small backpack with me, I could only purchase two small pieces. I bought the slinky in black, too, for a cardigan. I was inspired by someone (and I can't remember whose blog I saw it on now) who recently made a Jalie cardigan in black slinky that was really lovely. That will make an appearance soon.
Because I had so much fabric leftover, I knocked out a quick TNT tshirt (KS3338) with the additional self drafted cowl from an old Australian Stitches. Their version also had a gathered front which, in hindsight, I should have added, too. Compared to yesterday, with two garments from $3 worth of fabric, these are relatively expensive at two garments for $18, but I'm not complaining!

Great tops and love the colour. I've made up KS3378 before only with short sleeves but like the look of long sleeves so this may make it into the SWAP as my last t-shirt.

Clegs is dangerous, when I was there in 2009 I bought some beautiful materials, still to make them up mind you. I think it was Kathryn's blog that you saw the Jalie cardigan in the slinky, she also made the Jalie tie top as well.

$18 is still very cheap for nice tops such as these. Clegs is actually quite evil being close to Flinders St Station so they know I can pop in before my train leaves to go back home during Melbourne trips. Clegs has some beautiful fabric - I would love some colour washed floral silks they have but um I think they are close to $80/metre so I suppose I will just dream on. ( or win tattslotto )

Nice. Do you come to Melbourne that often? We should meet up for coffee/ fabric shopping (window or actual), I can take you to a couple of places that cost a fraction of Cleggs prices and have good quality.. You'll need a car though, or a helmet (I ride a scooter).

I went downstairs to my sewing room to press my black skirt. I couldn't find my pressing cloth in its usual place, so I started opening all the drawers in my sewing desk to see if I had inadvertently put it away. This is the drawer that holds shoulder pads and large chunky zips, so I don't open it very often. This is a brown tree snake, commonly known as a night tiger. They won't kill you, but their venom packs a punch, so children, the elderly or people with weak hearts will get pretty sick. The picture doesn't do him justice as they are the most lovely shimmery bronze with a salmon coloured, very glossy belly. Whilst I have no fear of snakes and will happily pick them up and move them, finding this one in my sewing desk made me jump. Glad to see the back of this year ...

I don't have any pictures of my dress or current sewing to show today. Two close deaths this past week have rendered me incapable of much at all. My mother passed away just before Christmas and my oldest and dearest friend, who was closer than any family member, died this past Monday. I do have pictures of the finished dress and the therapeutic sewing I've been doing, but right now I can't be arsed plugging the camera in and uploading. It's hot and humid and I'm too weary, so you'll have to wait until next year. Happy New Year to anyone who might read this. I look forward to a bright and happy 2009 and wish you all the same.
